General Approach to Learning: Play-Based, Teacher-Led

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

Due to our 6:1 ratio, teachers have time during the day to give one on one instruction to any child who may need it. We keep our classroom small (12 children) so that we can continue to monitor each child.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

We believe in a very balanced education. Children learn while they play and we feel this is a very important part of their social-emotional growth. Our teachers integrate learning and teachable moments whenever possible. We do focus on ABC's, numbers and counting, science concepts and pre-reading and pre-writing activities as a part of our daily curriculum.

A Typical Day

Children in our school will have a hour of classroom time with the teacher and aide. This time includes circle time, stories, art, and letters and numbers of the week. Science activities and cooking may also be included.
Our children have a half hour of "Room to Roam" during which time the students have the option to explore the other classrooms, play in the back or stay in their own room.
Discovery Preschool has a large outdoor area where the children can get their "wiggles" out. This is a time to run, climb, ride tricycles, and play games.
The end of our day includes stories, music and movement.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

We are in contact with our parents at all times. E-mail is a constant way that parents are informed of upcoming events and activities. We also have an excellent web site that can be utilized on a daily basis. Teachers have meetings with parents through out the year and are also available for conferences as needed. Parents and staff can make phone calls or email as necessary.
Our school holds parent conferences once a year, in the spring, to go over their child's progress and

Separation is Handled through:

  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
  • Small group sessions
  • Extra staff dedicated to handle separation
  • Abbreviated schedule at start of school year

Handling Separation: From the Director

We always say our good-byes at the door of the classroom. This way, separation is not associated with the teachers or the inside of the classroom. We comfort the child and try to get the child engaged in a activity quickly. This usually helps them to forget what was upsetting them. We give lots of love and hugs as needed and give constant reassurance that everything is going to be okay.
