School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Play-Based, Teacher-Led

From the Director:

Children learn a lot through play. We also believe that we are there to give them experiences to prepare them for kindergarten. We believe in introducing the concepts covered (whether it be alphabet, shapes, beginning math concepts) to all children and then letting them take from it what they can. Some children will be developmentally ready for more, some won't. Each child is an individual.

If a child is behind:
1. We offer advice to parents on how to help the child at home
2. We help the child during class
If the child is excelling:
1. We give the child ways to expand the activity
2. Offer advice and encouragement to parents of things they can be doing at home
If the child is different:
1. We meet them where they are.
2. Offer advice as needed to parents.

Our Vision
-TLC is dedicated to teaching children creatively in all areas of development
-Our low adult/child ratio allows us to meet the social, emotional and academic needs of each child, while building their confidence to succeed.
-We recognize each child as an individual and incorporate various learning styles in teaching.
-We foster a nurturing and loving environment that encourages creativity, community and compassion.
-We are a Christian preschool and incorporate morals and values into our lessons. Children are taught to treat other people the way they want to be treated with love and respect. In addition Christian themes are introduced at both Christmas and Easter along with Santa and the Easter Bunny.

A Typical Day

Arrival - Playtime
Circle/Calendar Time (includes calendar activities, music, poems star of the day and stories)
Center Time (usually 5 centers - 2 teacher directed, 3 independent)

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

We test each child 3 times a year on basic kindergarten readiness skills. We have a formal conference set up with each parent in February to discuss the test and whether we feel the child is developmentally ready for kindergarten. In addition to a scheduled conference, we are always available to meet with parents. We do many informal conferences. We also have a weekly newsletter that goes out every Thursday. We try and form a close relationship with each family.


Separation is Handled through:

  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
  • Extra staff dedicated to handle separation

Handling Separation: From the Director

One of the teachers will sit with the child and try and get the child interested in something else. Sometimes a child just wants to be held for a couple of minutes. Sometimes reading a book or playing with a favorite toy or getting them involved with a friend works. This is usually only an issue with a couple of kids for the first couple of classes. After that, kids run in, sometimes even forgetting to give mom or dad that good bye hug or kiss. :-)
