School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Play-Based

From the Director:

Our program for 2yr and 3 yr ages becomes more structured with the maturity of the children. Our 4 year olds have the most structure-age appropriate during 'class time'. All of our children experience a combination of free play and choice time in addition to structure. We have created a balance the children enjoy. We celebrate our children's achievements and milestones with them - encouraging growth and independence.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

Our program is designed to promote a positive self-image, to build a sense of confidence and allow each child to grow to his/her maximum potential intellectually, socially and emotionally.

Along with learning basic cognitive skills, each child will learn to make friends, socialize with others, develop listening skills and expand his/her vocabulary. By playing and experimenting, each child will develop stronger gross motor and fine motor capabilities.

Each child is treated as a unique individual.

A Typical Day

We open @ 6:30am and there is free play until 9:00am.

Circle time @ 9:00am w/ snack.

The day continues with Concept (themed learning time)
* Music (finger plays, songs, nursery rhymes, records/CDs, musical instruments, large motor activities)
* Art activities
* Outside play time
* Lunch (provided by Peter Pan)
* Story time
* Nap time
* Afternoon circle/story
* Snack
* Outside free play

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

We send home weekly lesson plans for all ages. We have a monthly newsletter to parents. Parents are free to talk to teachers and directors either by telephone or during drop off or pickup.

Some parents ask for meetings. We have several events annually where parents can meet one another, such as Parent Workshop (open house), Mother's Day Social, Father's Day Social, Diversity potluck.

We also have evaluations of the children and parents are invited to ask questions and voice areas they would like to address.

We have children from all over the Bay Area. Therefore, we recommend Peter Pan 'The Academy' if the parent wants to.

Separation

Separation is Handled through:

  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
  • Extra staff dedicated to handle separation
  • Parents in classroom early on
  • Abbreviated schedule at start of school year

Handling Separation: From the Director

We ask parents to bring their child to visit during free play time. Then the day they start, we show them their cubby, where the bathroom is, introduce them to their teachers, and when the parent is ready to go, we take the child to the 'bye bye' window to wave goodbye to their parent. We always allow the children to wave goodbye.
