Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Play-Based, Teacher-Led

From the Director:

Odyssey's approach to learning follows the needs of our children, and varies by age; younger rooms are more play-based, while the oldest rooms will naturally have more structure. Our goal is to identify those practices and procedures which work best for the children at each respective age and apply those in a nurturing manner.

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

Individualized teaching has become a catch-phrase in this industry. Every company knows that parents want to hear that their child will be treated as an individual and, therefore, they all say that that's what they do - it's a part of their marketing effort. All we can say at Odyssey is that our staff is better than theirs and that we do a better job of training our staff in the variety of efforts necessary to actually achieve the goal of individualized attention. This is actually a part of our culture at Odyssey and we will, whenever possible, provide individual teaching and achieve individual results for our children. You are invited to come tour our school and see for yourself and to talk to other customers.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

Infant and Toddler parents receive detailed daily reports highlighting the learning, play, academic, eating, sleep and even bathroom occurrences during the day. Our teachers and administrative staff at all age levels always are available for individual conferences. Developmental profiles are done on each child at the beginning of each school year and/or upon any transition to a new room. There are two parent-teacher conferences each year to ensure that our staff is aware of parent goals and that the parents are aware of their child's progress.

Separation is Handled through:

  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
  • Extra staff dedicated to handle separation
  • Parents in classroom early on

Handling Separation: From the Director

Virtually all children will experience some separation anxiety at one point in their schooling. Odyssey nurtures such children and works with the parents to establish a plan that works for them. In addition, our closed-circuit monitors in the lobby allow the parent to leave the room shortly after dropping off and then observe their child's transition to normal prior to leaving our school. Parents also can use our Internet Video Monitoring system to keep up with their children during the day and can immediately call us with any questions or concerns.
