Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Description of how teachers work with children who are  "behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students

Because the children I take are so young - generally 2 years old, some even younger, a few older - most differences I see are at the level of verbal and social skills. I treat every child differently according to their needs and preferences. Children who are more shy and anxious socially need a lot more encouragement and tenderness than an exuberant and rambunctious child who may need more reminding of boundaries and turn-taking. Children who are preciously verbal can engage in quite a different level of conversation (obviously!) than can a child with no English or language delays. I adapt the songs and verses at circle time to the abilities in my group. Because my group never exceeds 8 children, I am able to give every child individual attention and I get to know them very well indeed.

Parents' Comments on Individualized Teaching

Parent #1
Our child's teacher is a natural with this age group (2-3). She is warm, affectionate, and sets up a rhythm that the children appreciate. Interestingly, sharing problems typical of this age are very minor in this school.

Parent #2
The rhythm the teacher provides is excellent. The children never seem to be bored, or over or under-stimulated. The teacher is very loving, experienced, and flexible. My child talks about her constantly at home, and I hear that other chlidren also love this teacher. I meet children who in Kindergarten who still grin when I mention this preschool, and their parents talk about how difficult it was for them to leave it.
