School Philosophy and Mission
" Cornerstone's philosophy toward preschool education is to provide an environment in which children can learn through play. Play is a child's way of researching his or her environment to see how the world operates. Ample time is given to observe, explore, speculate and discover the world.
Play increases a child's ability to adapt to different situations by giving him or her opportunities to build a repertoire of responses and acquire skills. Play enables children to let off steam in a socially acceptable fashion. Play helps develop intellectual competence: it aids concentration, spontaneous thinking and self-concept.
The curriculum is structured to provide a good balance of small- and large-motor activities, individual and group experiences, active and quiet play. Center-based activities the children may choose from include playing the dramatic play area, creating an art project, exploring the small manipulative toys, easel painting, listening to a story and exploring building concepts. The morning also includes circle time, outdoor playtime and a snack. The curriculum is secular - there is no religion-based education at Cornerstone.
