School Philosophy and Mission
"My First School, A Cooperative Experience, was established in 1963 by parents in the Floral Park United Methodist Church who saw the need for early childhood education programs. This nondenominational, not-for-profit school introduces children to their first school experience in a warm and nurturing environment.
The “cooperative model” means that parents are active participants in their children's education. Parents comprise the Board of Directors, serve on committees, and act as Helping Parents under the direction of a certified Masters level teacher. Parental involvement aids in the child's adjustment to school life. For parents, it is a rare opportunity to observe and participate in their child's classroom.
The curriculum stresses social and emotional development through guided play, arts and crafts, stories, music, and movement. Children are encouraged to share, take turns, listen, and use language to develop a classroom community in which each child has the opportunity to speak, grow, and learn."
