School Philosophy and Mission

"Our programs are designed to offer children opportunities to explore and discover their world. We believe children learn best through hands-on experiences that welcome self-expression and creative thinking. We work to provide an environment in which children are able to make real choices in an atmosphere of acceptance and cooperation. We place an emphasis on fostering independence while gaining social skills, providing a language-rich environment, and recognizing the importance of physical development.

Our curricula are designed to meet the needs and interests of the whole child, with activities addressing individual learning styles and multiple intelligences. Some of the resources utilized for curriculum development are the NAEYC Accreditation Program Standards and the Guidelines for Preschool Experiences by the Early Childhood Advisory Council.

Meeting individual needs is an important part of our philosophy. We often seek expert advice in assessment and development of individualized programs. We work with outside consultants, early intervention, and special needs programs of local public school systems.

In addition to the general community consultants and resources we recommend, we have two consultants on staff at Groton Community School. Patty Barr of Imagimotion Kidz visits classrooms each week for creative movement activities to promote children's physical development, listening skills, and social-emotional growth. Susan Lizotte, our Occupational Therapy Consultant, also visits classrooms each week, to offer her invaluable expertise and advice on teaching strategies and activities to benefit individual children and our school overall. We are especially excited about her guidance in helping us implement the Handwriting Without Tears Program.

Handwriting Without TearsĀ® introduces children to lines, curves, sizes, and directional concepts through a unique curriculum using multi-sensory techniques, beginning in the early preschool years. Before children even pick up a pencil, they are working toward consistent habits for letter recognition and formation in subsequent years. The instructional techniques and activities also help improve a child's self-confidence, pencil grip, body awareness, and posture.
