Parents are allowed into the school and class at anytime , but drop-ins are not encouraged as this could be disruptive to classroom programing - and not so useful in helping the children separate. Separation is completed on an individualized basis and the different pace and needs of the children are understood and assisted with. The beginning of each day is 'free play' and parents are able to stay and play with child for a more than reasonable period of time to help each day's separation (play a game, read a book). I think parent participation in school planning and programming is encouraged and parents can be as active as they would like - or not like. I think participation varies, related to the reality of parents' working schedules and interest. Parent socialization is encouraged, but not excessively. Teacher's are available for questions/concerns in a variety of ways (phone calls, emails, requested private meetings). weekly updates of classroom activities are informative and useful. The pre-school's emphasis is on developmental goals - with a Montessori focus - play is work. Although academics are there (alphabet learning, numbers concepts, etc)- the emphasis is much more on children learning social skills, feeling successful and gaining a love of learning and understanding the world around them, than on learning to read, for example - with a belief that these are the true building blocks for later academic success. Children thrive in a wide range of developing. later and earlier development seem to all be viewed as successful on this path.

You can be as active a parent as you choose to be but it is not a requirement. Many working parents do what they can but some not much. At home parents can spend a lot or a little time with the school or the class.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
Much opportunity for parents to be involved in parent association programs that enrich the school. We volunteer in the classroom for special events and field trips. As classroom parents we are encouraged to get to know each other via parent pot luck dinner and email exchanges. Fundraising participation is encouraged in a variety of ways (items to be bought via children activities as well as direct donation). There are constant requests through this wide variety of ways, however no pressure to participate or give.

Parent #2
We make a financial contribution at year end (not required).

Parent #3
A list of email contacts re in and out of school requests. One pot luck a year for parents (without children).
