I chat with parents at the end of every school day about how their child is doing, but if there is a problem I want to talk to them about, then I telephone them after school so that the child is not party to the conversation. I am also happy to communicate via e-mail.
Separation

Director's Comments
The first week of preschool I split the class into two groups of 4 children; 4 children come one day, and 4 the next. The following week we resume a normal schedule with 8 chldren on both days. The slow start allows me to spend extra time with the children who need it. Parents are welcome to stay as long as they wish in order to help their child settle in. If a particular child is having a problem adjusting, I will visit that child at home and talk with the parents about different strategies we can try.
Parents' Comments
Parent #1
This preschool has been a wonderful social learning opportunity for my child. She loves it and has made friends there.
Parent #2
The children's best interest is always at heart. Their needs are taken into account, and regarding initial separation; the teacher is a great judge of when a child is ready for preschool. Children who are upset as parents leave are generally not upset for long at all. If a child is still upset a while later, the teacher will call the parent and let them know. Rarely does she have this issue. If I have any trouble with my child getting upset, it would be getting upset about leaving school, as all the children adore being there.

Kids are a funny bunch. They are often loath to change and anything new. But still, our little ones are open to so much -- and so much more than we more ossified parents are! Think of poetry: preschoolers happily read and repeat poems with ease and
