Director's Comments

Activities include Back-to-School Night at start of school year, 'Daily Boards' as you enter the classroom with information for that day, written weekly news bulletins, informal on-going parent/teacher communication, formal scheduled parent/teacher conferences, parent education workshops. We consider our relationship with parents to be one of trust and communication, working in partnership on behalf of the child. We generate a sense of community and belonging as parents strive to make the best decisions for their child. Our role provides professional expertise in support of parenting. Our knowledge of schools and the application process allows us to collaborate with parents to ensure all appropriate options are considered. Our role is supportive to help reduce stress and ensure an effective strategy is utilized.

Separation

OVERALL RATING (5.0)
Five Stars

Beginning of the year separation is handled through:

- Pre-entry meetings with parents at school

- Extra staff dedicated to handle separation

Director's Comments

Written orientation on separation is provided with the enrollment materials given to parents. Emphasis on preparation before school begins, opportunity for child to visit program prior to starting. Individual approach for each child. More gradual for some, parents can stay to create time to build trust and comfort.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
Leslie Banta, director of ELC, firmly believes and encourages the development of community. Many of the students are from the Noe Valley neighborhood, play dates and social meetings are encouraged (with sensitivity so that children aren't left out). Leslie offers parent coaching as needed, keeps parents well-informed with what is happening in the classroom, and encourages parents to make appointments at anytime if we have any issues to discuss.

Parent #2
The home-school connection at Eureka Learning Center is very natural and organic. Opportunities to share among families and with the school are abundant, but I have never felt obligated to participate beyond what I am inspired to do. An example is that we live close to the school, so one day the whole class came for a visit. A number of other close by families also did this. The children learned about how families are all different, and worked together as a group to have a successful visit.

Teachers are always available, whether for advice about an issue, future school discussion, parent coaching, etc.

They do not use voice mail because they always answer the phone personally. There is no answering machine at the school.
