Parents' Comments

Separation issues are handled with conferences, check-ins with parents, and other creative responses as needed.

Parent #2
C5 has an intense focus on child-centered learning supported by families and teachers. It is not just play-based, nor goals oriented.

Instead, curriculum is emergent based on the children's interests, around which extensive unique learning projects are developed together by children, teachers, and families. Projects often last 2-3 months, are developmentally appropriate, and often involve teachers and families marshalling materials and outside experiences in support of the project.

Communication is constant but informal.

Preschool separation and start-of-school issues weren't an issue for us because our children started at C5 as infants.

Referrals and assistance are always available individually, and group meetings and information sessions are organized in response to parent interest and needs. The feel of the school is emergent and evolutionary, rather than rigid and pre-set.

Parent #3
C5 Children's School operates year-round, not on a school year calendar, so some of the activities are conducted on an ongoing basis rather than at a particular time of the year.

Community cohesiveness is a challenge at this school because it is located in the workplace and draws from families scattered all over the Bay Area.

Parent #4
My child started this school at six months so she was already used to school & we were aware of program, etc.

Parent #5
The school's administration has mildly hostile relationship towards parents. This is expressed through policies it sets up without parent's involvement. Namely failure to sign-in/out child more than tree times can result in child being expelled from the program! Similarly failure to pick child up on time can result in the same.

Parent #6
Weak, ineffective leadership.
