Director's Comments

When a child first starts and then in six month increments, we do an informal evaluation of reading and math skills. We have a conversation with the parents and go over the evaluation. We then set some learning goals for the next six months so that the parents will know what to expect during the next six months.

For older children, homework is provided and reviewed by the child's teacher.

Parents are welcome to schedule a conference at any time. Likewise, if we notice a particular problem area, we will request a meeting. Additionally, general notices for all families are posted on the wall next to the exit doors as well as sending notes home from time to time.

Separation

OVERALL RATING (1.0)
One Star

Beginning of the year separation is handled through:

- Pre-entry meetings with parents at school

- Extra staff dedicated to handle separation

- Parents in classroom early on

Director's Comments

Before a child attends our school, we do what we call a Ferber: For three one-hour sessions, parents will come to school with their child. During the first session, the parent will stay with the child for 15 minutes then leave for 5 minutes. The parent will say to the child, "I'm leaving but I'll be back" or some variation to that. The parent will then go no matter what the child does and return in 5 minutes. This will continue for one hour. During subsequent sessions, the time with the child will be reduced and the time away will increase. We have found that this teaches the child that their parents will be back to get them and tremendously alleviates the anxiety they feel in a new situation.
