Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline
Our primary method of discipline is to talk with children and explain to them that Center rules are based on safety. We will not allow children hurt themselves or others, verbally or physically, and we will not allow children to hurt or destroy property. Discipline is teaching. When we discipline children, we teach them to use desirable behavior in the place of undesirable behavior. Desirable behavior includes following the rules of the Center, playing cooperatively with other children and listening to the requests of teachers and other adults. Undesirable behavior includes disrupting group or learning activities, hurting other children, persistently refusing to obey a teacher or other adult, and stealing or damaging learning materials. Our first response to undesirable behavior is to remind the child of the rule and reason for it (for example, 'We do not throw sand because it can hurt someone's eyes.'). If the behavior persists, we will redirect the child to another area or activity ('Since you are still throwing sand, you need to go inside and play for a while.'). A time frame is included, after which the child can return to the activity and try again ('After you play inside for a few minutes, you can try playing in the sand again if you can remember to be safe.'). If we find that a child is having a tantrum or is not listening to the teacher at all, s/he will be asked to sit in a chair until s/he is calm enough to talk to the teacher about what happened. We believe that consistency plays a large part in eliciting desirable behavior. Therefore, Center teachers regularly talk with parents regarding behaviors seen in school. Parents can help ensure that the child is receiving the same messages at home and school by keeping staff informed of changes in the child's life, and sharing techniques they have found successful in dealing with problematic behavior. Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety
Parent #1
Although this school looks run down, it was much better for my child than another neighboring school that is much more prestigious. You cannot put a price tag on loving care.

Wise Words to Remind You to Watch the Amazing Show of Childhood
One of the most dog-eared and spine-cracked books on our Savvy Parenting Shelf is Wendy Mogel's The Blessing of a Skinned Knee . This month's look at the big picture of parenting and childhood prompted yet another return to the wisdom in Dr. Mogel's pages:
