Discipline

OVERALL RATING (4.7) Four And Half Stars

Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children:
...are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline

Disruptive behavior, lack of cooperation and broken rules are not only a part of being a child but are also discipline challenges that face parents and teachers of young children. We meet these challenges head on by helping the children develop self-control. Children learn to build self-control when they see the possible consequences of their actions. Alternative behaviors are proposed. They participate in the problem solving negotiations. This allows the children the freedom to learn to balance their needs with those of others, feel good about themselves and become increasingly independent. The children experience acceptance and appreciation by respecting, maintaining and enhancing their self-esteem. Corporal punishment, humiliation or frightening methods of conrol (usage of food, rest or isolation as punishment, punitive methods of toilet training) are prohibited at Brooklyn Free Space. We feel the key to discipline is mutual respect, acceptance, encouragement, kindness, firmness and admiration.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

We are big on meetings. We have a small meeting table to 'talk' about problems.
