Discipline

OVERALL RATING (5.0) Five Stars

Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children:
...are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline

The first step we use for discipline is communication with the child. Allowing them to express their feelings and equipping them with vocabulary if necessary to help express to others when they are hurt, or angry. The second step is redirection to another activity. The third step is to give the child some time alone or sitting with the teacher. After a few minutes the child is asked to discuss the problem and helped to resolve it. Teachers use role modeling as an effective tool in discipline.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

Child A would be asked how they would feel about not being invited to play . Teacher could relate a recent episode when it happened to them. "Remember when your feelings were hurt because___ didn't want to play with you."
Another approach would be to invite the other child to play with the teacher. During their play period she/he could give the child ideas to use on how to be invited into the play.
A teacher could also ask to play with child A and C and then invite child B into the play.
