Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children:
...are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline
We see 'discipline' as an opportunity for learning. Children help in creating rules and norms and are given reasons for limits. Generally there are discussions around why something can or cannot happen. As we re-tell stories of experiences we can practice planning for what to do 'next time' so that experiences can be springboards for future activities.
Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario
Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'
A teacher would be sympathetic to the excluded child, and support both children in branching out to other friendships. Depending on the age of the children, the teacher could include her/himself to support threesome play at times.
Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety
Parent #1
The Mills campus is used for daily walks and discovery/teaching in all types of weather and part of what I know my child loves.
Parent #2
Not once in the 3 years in the infant/toddler program have I felt the school has ever compromised safety. My daughter has developed to verbal skills to communicate her feelings regarding conflicts and the independent thought to resolve them effectively or engage someone to help her.
Parent #3
The Children's School is on the beautiful Campus of Mills College. There is a security gate, and security guards patrolling the campus. The area feels very safe and secure. The classrooms and environment are fairly new, spacious and state-of-the-art.

Food Allergies
- We work with the parent to determine the necessary precautions. It may be that certain foods cannot be in the room. It may be that the staff can monitor the child's intake.
- We ask parents to provide child-safe snacks for their allergic child
Medications
- Child specific decisions guide us. Particularly important are asthma plans and epipens for children with certain other allergies.
