Discipline

OVERALL RATING (4.6) Four And Half Stars

Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children:
...are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline

Discipline at Skyline is handled in a positive way and it is hoped the children will begin to learn problem solving techniques as well as self control from our discipline procedures. We involve the parents as well as the child and staff in our approach to discipline.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

We acknowledge the child's right to chose who they are playing with but also remind them that we all play together at Skyline because it hurts someone's feelings when they are not included. We then try to find ways the three of the children involved can play together. Later on we mention to the parents that their child would really like some one on one time to play with child c. We also set up a time when child A. and child C are together.

Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety

Parent #1
Skyline Preschool has a very nice campus, being situated in the Oakland Hills. They have a great classroom, filled with fun activities. The classroom is very large and well lit. Outside, the playground has a new play structure and water play area. There's also a large area for riding trikes and bikes on 'Bike Days'. That's when the kids get to bring their own bikes to ride at school. There are also plenty of vehicles in the main playground to ride on a daily basis. The playground also offers a playhouse, basketball, a boat, a castle and a garden area. The school also offers, Spanish and Dance classes for the kids. Music and art are a part of the daily class activities. The teacher plays a mean ukulele.

Parent #2
The outside setting is spectacular - I knew this was 'it' when I walked through the gate (when I met/observed the teachers, I realized how special Skyline really is)! The playground equipment was recently replaced, and a mermaid water fountain was added in the sand box this spring. The kids have a great time!

Parent #3
I feel like discipline is always handled fairly and firmly, but with love. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions and to work things out for themselves, but not without the support of the teachers. Children are not yelled at, belittled, lectured, or humiliated. They are always treated with respect and caring.

Parent #4
My son is an outdoor kind of guy, he loves the bikes and play structure. There is always something to do and play with.

Parent #5
Skyline is a clean, well-maintained school and teachers are open to suggestions and assistance.

Parent #6
The classroom is one large room, but the music, library and art areas are well set-up and clearly used for those respective purposes.

Parent #7
The outside area can be very cold as it is on Skyline up at the top of the Oakland Hills.

School is only one big room which makes supervision easier, but separation of different activies (obviously not hardly any) difficult.
