Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children:
...are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline
Most tussles at this age (2 or thereabouts) are over toys. I use humor and a cheery manner to defuse the situation, encouraging the rival claimant to use her words and ask for a turn after the other child has finished. I then give the original claimant 2 more minutes to enjoy the toy and then announce it is now the other child's turn. This works in almost all cases. Occasionally there is a child who has more shoving and hitting problems, and this sometimes requires that I shadow them for a period of time in order to intercept any potential negative behaviors before they happen. I then praise them for not hitting, and try and set up a new pattern of behavior. I do not use time-outs at this age, and of course never any physical punishments or 'bad boy/girl' language..
