Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline
Discipline is necessary for the successful functioning of any nursery school classroom. We try to do this with a true acceptance and understanding of your preschool children, their level of development and with respect for the individual child and the group needs. The school provides interesting and age appropriate activities for each child. However, if a child is having a difficult time, we try to divert the child's attention, spending time with the child, talking quietly but firmly about appropriate rules for this child and the group.
Teachers are trained in discipline and how to implement it in the classroom. Children are encouraged to speak to each other when there is a problem and the teacher acts as facilitator. When limits need to be set, the teacher sets firm limits that allow the child to gain self-control. Children should never be embarrassed in front of their peers. Children should never be sent to an isolated area. Food is never used as a means of punishment or reward. Corporal punishment is forbidden. Children are empowered to gain control of themselves and rejoin the group when they are ready.
If a child is having a very difficult time listening to the rules in the classroom then the parents will be consulted and the parents and teachers will come up with a plan to help the child. If a child bites another child in school, the parent is notified at the end of the day. In the rare event that the same child bites again, we then call the parents and set up a team meeting to create a plan of action for working through this issue.

Wise Words to Remind You to Watch the Amazing Show of Childhood

Montessori? Waldorf? Play-based?
What school type is right for your child? Is one model better than another? What does the research say?
