Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline
One word: positive. Children are redirected, given choices, taught to use words and not hands when they are mad, taught that it's okay to express their feelings, but that they need to learn to control their behavior. We praise them when they remember the rules. We use customized class rules that are always evolving. We cross rules off lists when that rule is no longer an issue. We do not use time out. We might use a "time away" with a teacher to discuss an issue and how it could have been handled in a better way next time. You also might wonder why there's a large, handcrafted wooded rocking horse in the Director's office. That's "Chance." If a child is sent to the office, he can sit on Chance while we discuss what he or she needs to do the next time. Chance is happy to give that child a second chance and knows he or she will make a better choice next time. Some adults like to stop by the office and sit on Chance just for fun.
Food Allergies
- We ask parents to provide child-safe snacks for their allergic child
- We have a food allergy policy and form depending on the seriousness of the allergy
Medications
- We keep their medication on hand at all times
- We keep medication in original container, lock it up, it is only given out by certain staff persons. Please see policy in Parent Handbook

What school type is right for your child? Is one model better than another? What does the research say?
