Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline
Teachers are trained in indirect guidance to anticipate and prevent problems before they occur. Low ratios and small group sizes, appropriate room arrangement and individualized developmentally appropriate activities keep children engaged and challenged without frustrating the child. The classroom schedule is planned for children to have a balance of active/quiet time as well as large/small group activities and adequate transitions. If guidance issues do occur, teachers have received training on appropriate techniques to assist children in learning self-control. Teachers will use encouragement and positive language as well as redirection to address most concerns. If the problem persists, the teacher will work with the child/children to evaluate the situation and support problem-solving skills. Teachers will help children identify and deal with emotions and feelings. Children will also be a part of setting the class rules so that if the problem continues, the consequences will be clear. Teachers will not use: Corporal punishment or threat of corporal punishment Punishment associated with food, naps, or toileting Pinching, shaking, or biting a child Hitting a child with a hand or instrument Putting anything in or on a child's mouth Humiliating, ridiculing, rejecting, or yelling at a child Subjecting a child to harsh, abusive or profane language Placing a child in a locked or dark room, bathroom or closet Requiring a child to remain silent or inactive for inappropriately long periods of time for the child's age. Teachers will work closely with families if behavior concerns persist to ensure consistency between the home and the center.
Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario
Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'
If child C became upset, the teacher would assist child C in identifying and addressing the feelings he/she is having. The teacher would also facilite a discussion to help child C find a solution that engages the child in an activity. The teacher would continue to observe the child to ensure he/she continued to be engaged and have a productive day.

Food Allergies
- We do not allow certain foods in the classroom
- We keep special snacks for allergic children
Medications
- Generally since we only have children for 3 hours medications are not given. In the case of an acute need, medication would be kept lock away from the child and given ( and documented) if needed.
