Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children:
...are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario
Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'
There are too many unknown factors, for example previous behavior/actions, by the children to answer this question. However, I will state that we believe that through their interactions with each other, children develop the social skills that enable them to function well in a group setting. The children develop listening and sharing skills, respect for each other and learn to solve problems and conflicts, with teacher guidance. The small group size maintenance of peer groups through the year provide the ideal environment for continued development of these skills. We encourage children to 'use their words' and assist them in acknowledging feelings and creating solutions to interpersonal interactions, as developmentally appropriate for each child involved in any given situation.
Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety
Parent #1
This is a small school with a new play structure outside. I initially thought it was too small inside but then I realized (after putting her in another larger school) that many children this age feel better in smaller spaces. She loves it.
Parent #2
Facilities improvements have been made throughout our time at the school including new refrigerator and furnace, playground improvement, re-do kids bathroom, new windows and shades, and other upgrades that show thought and care.
Parent #3
Major cleaning and building upkeep are undertaken by the parents at least 2X a year. Recently installed new outdoor play area including water play and hanging bars.
Parent #4
Some of the toys and equipment are a little worn in but I think this is good for the kids. It feels very real and homey.

Wise Words to Remind You to Watch the Amazing Show of Childhood
One of the most dog-eared and spine-cracked books on our Savvy Parenting Shelf is Wendy Mogel's The Blessing of a Skinned Knee . This month's look at the big picture of parenting and childhood prompted yet another return to the wisdom in Dr. Mogel's pages:
Montessori? Waldorf? Play-based?
What school type is right for your child? Is one model better than another? What does the research say?
