Discipline

OVERALL RATING (4.8) Four And Half Stars

Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children:
...are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline

At Beth Yeshurun, we understand discipline to mean teaching. We try to understand why a child is acting the way he or she is- what precipitates the behavior? Children usually act the way they do for a reason. We need to understand the 'whys' behind a child's behavior in order to change it. With younger children, we do a lot of redirection. We don't believe in 'time out,' which often only shames the child and does not teach.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

We have a rule at our school: 'You can't say you can't play'. This rule is based on Vivian Paley's book by the very same name. One child cannot exclude another from play. As a Jewish preschool, we expect children to treat one another with kindness and respect. Children are very concrete and rule governed. The rule is posted and stated. The teachers are there to keep the children safe pyschologically as well as physically.

Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety

Parent #1
When some parents were concerned about the preschoolers being nice to one another, the director observed each classroom and held a parents meeting so that everyone's concerns could be put at ease.

Parent #2
Funds are currently being raised to enhance the overall appearance of the school and improve/update playground equipment. Neither however takes away from the overall warmth and nurturing environment, or content of the school.
