Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline
The goal of discipline here at BSSCC is to help a child internalize the limits we set on behaviors. Thus redirection to another activity in the youngest room and encouragement of the use of language when in conflict in the toddler room, becomes group discussions about respectful language and "classroom rules" in the preschool room.
Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario
Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'
A teacher would ask Child A how he/she thinks that makes Child B feel. We would ask Child B to articulate how that makes him/her feel. We then would ask all three children to think of a play scenario that would involve all three of them to play together. We would remind them that at preschool, we don't say, "you can't play."
Food Allergies
- We do not allow certain foods in the classroom
- We keep special snacks for allergic children
- We ask parents to provide child-safe snacks for their allergic child
Medications
- We keep their medication on hand at all times

Wise Words to Remind You to Watch the Amazing Show of Childhood
One of the most dog-eared and spine-cracked books on our Savvy Parenting Shelf is Wendy Mogel's The Blessing of a Skinned Knee . This month's look at the big picture of parenting and childhood prompted yet another return to the wisdom in Dr. Mogel's pages:

What school type is right for your child? Is one model better than another? What does the research say?
