Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children:
...are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety
Parent #1
The Co-Op is really a kid friendly space. It isn't pristine, but at the same time it is comfortable, functional and the kids love it.
Parent #2
Some of the toys, furniture and equipment look a bit worn. However, things are clean and safe. The school is very inviting, not at all sterile. The mantra is: 'Have fun, be safe, and use your imagination!' The kids all chant this at the end of morning meeting, and the school truly lives by this. For example, it's ok to jump on the floor but not to jump up on the loft. It's ok to toss a soft toy in the air, but not a hard. The school tries to give children as much freedom to explore and have fun as possible, as long as it is done with safety in mind. You don't hear many NOs from teachers. It's a very positive and encouraging environment. There are a number of children with food allergies, and the school has gone to great extent to find healthy, organic snacks that are safe for everyone. They don't 'single-out' the allergic children. Children seem very happy at the school, and if somebody is having a rough day, the teachers are always very understanding and loving. The school does head counts several times a day. The main door is locked. Hand washing is supervised before snack.

Wise Words to Remind You to Watch the Amazing Show of Childhood
One of the most dog-eared and spine-cracked books on our Savvy Parenting Shelf is Wendy Mogel's The Blessing of a Skinned Knee . This month's look at the big picture of parenting and childhood prompted yet another return to the wisdom in Dr. Mogel's pages:
Montessori? Waldorf? Play-based?
What school type is right for your child? Is one model better than another? What does the research say?
