Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline

Discipline is a complex topic that everyone defines differently. We approach discipline in positive terms, as a structure through which children learn social competence. To promote the best learning environment possible and to help children learn appropriate behaviors our staff is trained to provide the best possible guidance. We use clear messages, redirection, positive reinforcement for appropriate behavior, and natural or logical consequences. Staff is always present to help children understand the concept of rules and consequences. If a child needs to be removed from a situation a staff member will sit down with him/her to discuss a solution. We believe redirection helps a child regain control over the situation and themselves. When children are ready, they should be included in determining the natural or logical consequences for inappropriate behavior. This active involvement helps them become responsible for their actions towards other people and things. Younger children receive a clear message about acceptable and unacceptable behavior through redirection with words to explain the adult's actions. With gentle guidance, children gain the confidence to express themselves and the ability to work through difficult situations. Discipline at the Center is only effective when children are given consistent age appropriate limits, meaningful language to express their feelings, a healthy environment, and support from the families.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

We would check with child B to see how his/her feelings were. This may not upset the child at all and he may chose to play with other children too. If the child is upset we would ask child A and C to come over so that we can work it out. We would talk out about how everyone was feeling and what we could to to resolve the issue. The teacher would facilitate the conversation letting the children take the lead when possible.
