Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children:
...are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline
We work closely with parents to follow their personal philosophies regarding discipline; however, we do believe in follow through and consequences. By follow through, we are referring to the fact that we do not give false consequences. If we tell a child they must clean something up before they go inside for story, then we will help them clean up so they can come in and participate in story time. Although we do not believe in time outs, sometimes it is necessary for children to be taken away from the situation they are having trouble with so they can focus better. We are a small school, so the only place we can take them to calm their bodies or re-focus is the office. We do not refer to it as a time out.
Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario
Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'
We would tell child A we include everyone in our play at school. Play dates are a good time to have alone play times. We would also talk about how those words make us feel. We would ask child A to go back to child B and ask them how they would like to join in the play. We try to enforce doing things to make the other child feel better rather than just saying 'sorry'. Often times children learn that they can say or do hurtful things and then just say sorry.
Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety
Parent #1
The school is not in a fancy building. Playgroup is basically a one-room schoolhouse with a beautiful, spacious playyard. The equipment is safe and has been loved by many.

Wise Words to Remind You to Watch the Amazing Show of Childhood
One of the most dog-eared and spine-cracked books on our Savvy Parenting Shelf is Wendy Mogel's The Blessing of a Skinned Knee . This month's look at the big picture of parenting and childhood prompted yet another return to the wisdom in Dr. Mogel's pages:
Montessori? Waldorf? Play-based?
What school type is right for your child? Is one model better than another? What does the research say?
