Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline
Positive discipline encourages personal growth. Setting limits for preschoolers is very important, as it keeps everyone safe. Safety is a top priority at Little Village. We reinforce limits with natural consequences rather than punishment. We view mistakes as opportunities for learning and that is how we handle them. I always recommend these two books to reflect our discipline methods and have helped me personally as a parent, 1) Positive Discipline by Jane Nelson and 2) How to Talk to Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk, by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. These books help not only with children but any relationship. They basically are using the base of mutual respect, strengthening self-esteem and encouraging personal growth. After all, we are all growing a learning together.
Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario
Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'
We try and find the root of the problem and ask open ended questions like, 'What's going on?' or 'How does that make you feel?' or 'It looks like Sam wants to play-- what can he do to help?' Often there is a conflict and the teachers facilitate a step by step conflict resolution process. We often read stories about having more than one friend and we encourage playdates with many children to open up play alternatives.

Wise Words to Remind You to Watch the Amazing Show of Childhood
One of the most dog-eared and spine-cracked books on our Savvy Parenting Shelf is Wendy Mogel's The Blessing of a Skinned Knee . This month's look at the big picture of parenting and childhood prompted yet another return to the wisdom in Dr. Mogel's pages:
Montessori? Waldorf? Play-based?
What school type is right for your child? Is one model better than another? What does the research say?
