Director's Comments
We use a thematic approach in a developmentally appropriate environment where learning is exploratory and fun. There is individual choice time as well as small and large group activities. Teachers challenge the children by exposing them to information about the world they live in. Our eclectic approach to education allows us to adjust the program to the child rather than forcing the child to adjust to one philosophy. We follow the expectations and positions established by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). These practices may be reviewed in the book, 'Developmentally Appropriate Practices in Early Childhood Programs.'

| Other subjects taught | Battery Park City Day Nursery encourages social development. Children are taught to use manners, be polite and help each other. They are taught to use developmentally appropriate self-help skills. Toddlers are encouraged to drink from 'sippy cups' and later from open cups. Children first learn to put on their own jackets, and as they mature, they learn to fasten zippers, buttons & snaps. | n/a | ||||

Wise Words to Remind You to Watch the Amazing Show of Childhood
One of the most dog-eared and spine-cracked books on our Savvy Parenting Shelf is Wendy Mogel's The Blessing of a Skinned Knee . This month's look at the big picture of parenting and childhood prompted yet another return to the wisdom in Dr. Mogel's pages:
Montessori? Waldorf? Play-based?
What school type is right for your child? Is one model better than another? What does the research say?
