Parents' Comments
Parent #1
SJM is a traditional Montessori school, and follows the philosophy of Maria Montessori. Classroom set-up, curriculum, etc. follows the Montessori format.
Parent #2
The Montessori approach to learning is multi-sensory, developmental and whole child oriented. Language, geography, math, music, art and independent life skills are a few of the subjects which are learned as children do their work. The general format is that a teacher demonstrates (teaches) activities (work) to children individually or in small groups. Then, children can do that work when they choose to and at their own pace. Not only are the teachers available to assist, but other older students can help mentor their peers as well. Free play outside is available during the day, though teachers provide fun opportunities for the children. Social and emotional development is modeled and supported by the teachers, but allowed to develop amongst the children.
Parent #3
This school follows the AMI Montessori philosophy with the children choosing activities and the teachers instruct in individual or small group settings.

Wise Words to Remind You to Watch the Amazing Show of Childhood
One of the most dog-eared and spine-cracked books on our Savvy Parenting Shelf is Wendy Mogel's The Blessing of a Skinned Knee . This month's look at the big picture of parenting and childhood prompted yet another return to the wisdom in Dr. Mogel's pages:
