Parents' Comments
Parent #1
This is a Montessori setting, where children are choosing their own work. The room is set up in such a way that direction is provided through the activities that are provided for the students. There are 2 teachers in the room and they help to facilitate the work a student chooses. The class is also set up with mixed age groups, so this provides the older kids opportunities to reinforce what they have learned by 'teaching/helping ' the younger ones. Younger (3 year olds and some 4) leave at lunch so the older (5 and 6 year olds) have more one on one contact with the teachers in the afternoon, concentrating more on 'academics'.
Parent #2
In my view the curricular approach would really fall in between Predominantly Teacher-led and Free Play with Some Structure.
Parent #3
The Montessori classroom is unique in its 'prepared environment' which lays out very specific 'work' for the kids in core learning areas, but leaves them entirely to their devices to choose the work that interests them. This encourages independence and passion. They are never force-fed knowledge. It is free choice in a very structured classroom. Self-reliance is emphasized.

Wise Words to Remind You to Watch the Amazing Show of Childhood
One of the most dog-eared and spine-cracked books on our Savvy Parenting Shelf is Wendy Mogel's The Blessing of a Skinned Knee . This month's look at the big picture of parenting and childhood prompted yet another return to the wisdom in Dr. Mogel's pages:
