Director's Comments
We are truly a combination of the first two options above. We do have a routine, but encourage inquiry and choices throughout the children's day. We at Daisy believe in the emerging curriculum in which children's ideas and interests form a large part of our daily curriculum. We do have a routine in place, however, children are able to make their own choices and decisions which are appropriate. Most often, teachers are facilitators rather than directors of activities.

Teachers are available to respond to children's questions, and specific materials which they may need (although most are always available at their level) are provided. Teachers also facilitate and do initiate some activities including cooking and other science explorations, woodworking, shadow/slide projector play, etc. We do believe in the emerging curriculum as previously mentioned (e.g. children's concerns, their ideas are supported, and curriculum plans can be adapted). Children need balance and consistency.

Daisy is a developmental play based preschool. The curriculum stems from the classroom and the children's interests. Additionally the teachers observe the children's interests and expand upon them by bringing in more materials or starting projects to help expand thier understanding of thier interests. The teachers also introduce new ideas and concepts to the classroom throughout the year. They have a music teacher who proivdes a dance class weekly as well as a weekly drama class with a drama teacher. Music is part of the daily classroom activities in group singing and invididual exploration. Reading if done in groups daily as well as individually as requested. The children also often dictate stories to the teachers.

One of the most dog-eared and spine-cracked books on our Savvy Parenting Shelf is Wendy Mogel's The Blessing of a Skinned Knee . This month's look at the big picture of parenting and childhood prompted yet another return to the wisdom in Dr. Mogel's pages:
