Parents' Comments
Parent #1
Classrooms are set up with areas for imaginative play, reading, the day's projects, games, etc. There are lots of art projects and they are often tied to learning about something specific. For example, the kids learned about salamanders over several weeks by reading books, building 'salamander castles.' making up stories about salamanders and drawing. In my son's class this year, the imaginative play area was at times a restaurant, a house, a doctor's office and a store. It was very cleverly transformed each time, and the teachers spent some time talking with the kids about what people do in each setting. When it was a restaurant, they talked about proper behavior in a restaurant, how a waitperson takes your order, how you pay for your food, etc. So the area is open for free play but has some structure in how teachers expect the kids to use it.
Parent #2
There is a session of group time with a story and song. The remainder of the time is spent outside in free play with a station occasionally set up, then inside with free choice or a guided art project.
