Word on the Street

Jetty Island is a 2 mile long man made island composed of river sediment from the Snohomish River Channel.  Originally built in the late 1800's to provide a protected harbor and navigation channel, the Port of Everett gained ownership in 1929 and built a new marsh in 1989. The Jetty provides a wildlife habitat to bald eagles, water fowl, juvenile salmon and more. In a partnership with Everett Parks & Recreation, free ferry rides to the island are provided 7 days a week from July to September every year. A floating restroom without electricity or plumbing is provided seasonally right off of the boat dock but the Jetty is otherwise kept as natural as possible. A wide variety of bird species, guided nature walks, sandy beaches and warm shallow water for kids of all ages to splash in are just a few of the things to enjoy on Jetty Island. Long before the Parks Department provided transportation to the island, my mother and her family often visited the Jetty by personal boat.  She spent long summer days there creating fond memories.  I have my own childhood memories of Jetty Island thanks to the ferry shuttle service.  My mom and I used to pack a picnic lunch, our current favorite books, and a blanket to spend the day together out at the Jetty.  Our favorite moments though, are not of sunny days but rainy ones.  Days where the beach was nearly deserted, when winds and waves had washed treasures ashore for us to discover.  Days when it was just me and Mom.  I can't wait to create even more memories building sand castles, flying kites and wading in the warm water with my own children. Today the Jetty is much the same as it was back then.  The shuttle boat is bigger so more people can enjoy the island's beauty and the system for getting there more organized.  While the ferry is free, it's on a first come, first serve basis.  Boarding passes can only be acquired for same day service.  On sunny days there is often a wait.  Grab an ice cream cone from one of the shops and enjoy the sea breeze. Pack lightly but be prepared.  The weather can change quickly and you may not be able to go back to the mainland early if the boat is full.  Sunscreen is a must as there isn't any shelter from the sun on the island.  A light jacket even on the sunniest of days isn't a bad idea as the breeze is often cool.  The Jetty is a magical place far from technology, just waiting to be experienced!
