Spring gives us rainy skies, green grass, and lots and lots of baby animals. To explore all that Spring has to offer, head out to Kidwell Farm in Herndon, VA. It's a great place to let your kids sow their wild oats and run free….well, within the confines of a large working farm. The farm is a re-creation of a 1930's era working dairy farm, which was common in the area at that time. Not only can you explore the grounds of the farm and see, touch, hear, and smell (ewww!) the farm animals, you also get a glimpse of what it would have been like to have a family farm. There's a farmhouse, a barn, and outbuildings include the dairy, smokehouse, corn cribs, storage sheds, chicken houses, a blacksmith shop, and sheds for livestock. Farmhands can frequently be seen working various parts of the farm -- this is intriguing for kids of all ages (and adults too!).The baby animals are the stars of the show in the spring. Animals you might see include: horsespigscowsgoatspeacocksrabbitssheepchickens In addition to the animals, everyone loves the circa-1900 tractors, which kids can look at and explore. The farm also features a wagon ride, which takes you around the entire farm. You may even get a glimpse of someone on horseback as you pass by the riding trails. Make sure you pack a picnic because there are plenty of picnic tables. If you forget your lunch, you can purchase food there. Make sure you bring cash for the wagon ride. Also, there are two playgrounds adjacent to the far parking lot. These are a great way to burn extra energy before heading home.
