Fort Ward Park is one of 68 earthen forts that were built in the defense of Washington, D.C. during the Civil War. The fort was named for Commander James Harmon Ward, the first United States Naval Officer killed in the Civil War. The on-site museum at Fort Ward is a replica of the Civil War-era building that existed on the fort grounds, as photographed by the famous Civil War photographer, Matthew Brady.
