Word on the Street

There are places in Houston that, when we visit, I'm always surprised we don't go there more often. Count the Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens as one of them.

Never heard of the Arboretum? A lot of people haven't and they're definitely missing a hidden gem. If you want to show your child nature's beauty (and plenty of flowers), bring them over to Aldine Westfield Road north of town.

Admission is free and there's over 300 acres to explore on five miles of trails. Once you get to the gardens, you need to figure out which side to visit. The east side (divided by Aldine Westfield Road) features the botanic gardens with bamboo, color displays, ferns, tropics and more. It also has ponds and stairs and, my personal favorite, compost bins!

The west side has playgrounds, picnic areas, pavilions, hickory bog, cypress swamp and a boardwalk and more trails.

This is definitely a great way to burn off some excess energy -- though I might suggest visiting in a cooler month as you could get hot quickly in the summer.
