Word on the Street

If you ever want a change of pace from the playground scene or want to have a park to yourself, you may want to check out Allen Park. Located in Northwest Hills, Allen is a Travis County park which is admittedly basic. Parking is along the street, and you reach the park by taking a short walk, which takes you up a set of uneven stairs. There are picnic tables at the top, lots of shade afforded by cedar trees and hiking trails. Since the park is on a hill, you can see some great views of the city to the east. There is a clearing where kids can explore, complete with a tunnel. If your kids need slides, strollers or sand, this isn't the park for you. There are also no restrooms or bathroom facilities, although you are a short drive to anything you might need. But if you have children who are content with a picnic lunch and/or a friend along for company, you can enjoy some time outside in yet another of Austin's parks.
