Word on the Street
Dick Nichols Park is a favorite for Southies, and it's easy to see why. The park offers lots of amenities: two playgrounds, swings, sand volleyball courts, tennis courts, a basketball court, walking trails, picnic tables, a water feature, a pool and a large field for kite flying or running amok. On a typical weekend morning, many families take advantage of all the fun things to do, but it's by no means crowded. Adults might be playing tennis, playing street hockey on one of the basketball fields or walking dogs while several families play kickball and kids play happily in the sand in the volleyball court. The trails are under two miles and flat, so certainly doable for older preschoolers. The paved areas would be a good place for a younger child to practice using a trike or bicycle. Most of the kids' play areas are in full sun, so you might want to switch to a different park on brutal summer days or stick to the pool. Some of the picnic tables (which are reservable) are shaded and surrounded by lots of climbing trees. The park is certainly large and set far back from the road, making you forget you are just minutes from Mopac. Since there aren't many trees in the middle of the kids' play areas, it's easier than some parks to see where your child may be, which can be nice if you are watching multiple children that tend to head to opposite ends of a venue.
