Word on the Street

The Zilker Park Kite Festival, held on the first Sunday of March, is one of Austin's most anticipated events. It sets the stage for the beginning of Spring, and for the hundreds of hundreds of Springtime activities in Austin. In order to encourage creativity in children a Kite Tournament was created by.  Exchange Club in 1929. The first Tournament was held in Lamar Park, which is thought to have been close to the intersection of Congress Avenue and 1st street, and came to Zilker Park in 1936. It is the longest continuously running kite festival in the United States and is sponsored by the Exchange Club and the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department every year. All are welcome to the Zilker Park Kite Festival including pets. There is no cost to admission and most people attend to enjoy a beautiful in the park.
