Word on the Street

Mayfield Park is an urban oasis located off 35th Street, west of Mopac. Mayfield can be a perfect place for a curious preschooler. The main area consists of an historic house surrounded by ponds and gardens. Adjacent to the heart of the Park are hiking trails and a nature preserve. Perhaps most important to note are the boisterous caretakers of the grounds: peacocks. It may not be the easiest place with a preschooler and a younger sibling, as toddlers tend to want to splash in the fish ponds. The grounds provide a lot to explore and many of the flowers are in bloom, making the setting beautiful (in fact, Mayfield is a popular spot for local photographers). There are several picnic benches outside of the main area, so it would be a great place to bring lunch. The trails seem doable for an older preschooler, although the last time we tried my son was in an infant carrier. The only downside is that there are only portable toilets and as mentioned earlier, little siblings may not be able to resist the urge to try to enter the ponds. Luckily, it's easy enough to get in and out that you can just go when you have half an hour to kill and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells and take a break from the hustle and bustle.
