Word on the Street

Temperatures this week are hovering near 100 degrees.  Humidity is high, and crankiness has reached a level of no return.  To beat the temps and bring happiness -- and better sleep -- to your child's summer days, here is a list of public pools, local spraygrounds, and water parks to cool off when it gets just too hot.  Please note that it is not legal to swim in any Philadelphia rivers or streams.  Public PoolsBudget restraints kept many Philadelphia public pools closed last year, but most of the pools are open this summer.  You can help the city keep these pools operating by donating to the Splash and Summer Fund.  Due to this fund, Philadelphia was able to open 69 pools across the city.  For a list of the available pools and their opening dates, refer to this link.  For addresses of these pools, use this link.  SpraygroundsSpraygrounds are unique play areas, usually combined with existing playgrounds, where water is sprayed from mounted structures and geysers.   Philadelphia has four spraygrounds: Waterview Recreation Center, Rittenhouse and McMahon StreetsSmith Playground, 2100 S. 24th Street in Fairmount ParkFerko Playground, "J" & Cayuga48th & Woodland Sprayground hours are every day in the summer, 11 AM to 7 PM.  Water ParksSesame Place - Lower Bucks County is the spot to be when searching for Elmo, Ernie, and Big Bird.  Parades, rollercoasters, rides for the little ones, and other fun activities abound.  The park has many different water rides and calmer, shallow pool areas for tots, such as the Rubber Duckie Pond and Ernie's Waterworks. Older kids will love it just as much as the tiniest "Sesame Street" fans.Water World - Head over to Phoenixville to cool off on a hot day.  The park will keep little ones busy with the childrens' pool and slide, while the whole family will enjoy the family pool, slides, and rope swing. Dutch Springs - Located in Bethlehem, this small water park contains inflatable rides and slides on a lake.  Call ahead for age and height limits.  Life vests must be worn at all times. Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom - In Allentown, this large amusement park with rollercoasters, thrill rides, childrens' rides, and a water park will keep your entire family cool and entertained.  The water park contains rides that appeal to all ages, including the Lollipop Lagoon for the tiniest of splashers.
