Word on the Street

Tucked quietly in the hubbub of Old Town is the Portland Classical Chinese Museum, a great place to take your child for those afternoons when you want to just be, together. It is a tranquil little world, overlooked by the skyscrapers of the city. Save this destination for a day when your child has already "got all their ya-yas out"--you need to be mostly quiet here, but your child will enjoy the fish, the plants and flowers, and taking in all the different shapes and textures hidden throughout the garden. Travel over bridges, gaze down into still water, and as you walk, you can introduce the concept of "yin" and "yang" to your child. Make it a scavenger hunt and search for rocks, water, plants, architecture, and inscriptions during your stroll through the gardens. Sit quietly and see what your five senses notice: what plants can you smell, what birds can you hear? Don't forget to stop by the tea house for a warm drink and snack!  If you visit the website before your visit, you can download and print out activity sheets and a family guide so you can seek out all the hidden treasures located throughout the garden. Make sure to bring along your camera, because the Chinese Garden is full of places to snap away with beautiful light and architecture. If you bring your child back year after year, to enjoy the changing seasons and special stillness of the Classical Chinese Garden, you may find that they discover something new every time!
