Arts & Crafts
Never mind the big box arts and crafts stores, your child can find anything and everything they might want for expressing themselves artistically at SCRAP, and for amazingly cheap prices! (If you've lived in Portland for awhile or are a native, SCRAP is much like Wacky Willies, the amazing and odd shop that used to be on NW Vaughn.) SCRAP stands for School and Community Reuse Action Project and it is a nonprofit retail shop, as well as a gallery space, and a place for classes, camps, and DIY birthday parties. Every year, SCRAP diverts 50 tons of material from the waste stream. Schools visit SCRAP to learn about the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!
Stock is constantly rotating as the shop receives donations from individuals and businesses. A peek at their website reveals that you might find fabric from Nike, scrapbooking materials, and cloth bags as key pieces in one of your family's crafty sessions. SCRAP is a great clearinghouse for big sheets of paper for ambitious toddlers, old birthday cards to cut up and collage with, as well as yarn, fabric, and old wrapping paper. You will find something entirely new every time you visit. Let your child go wild shopping with only two dollars (really, you'll come away with a big sack of goodies for constructing robots or collecting bugs) and let their imagination guide them!
SCRAP is also a nice place to have a birthday party that is a bit "off the grid". Your child's interests will help a planner design a crafty activity to be completed in the workshop and the kind folks at SCRAP can even make eco-friendly goodie bags, hats, do face painting, and cupcakes. Your child and their guests (up to ten) will have a blast and help keep decorations and wrapping paper OUT of the landfill. A truly Portland style birthday!
If you want to have a special kid friendly outing, hit SCRAP and the Title Wave Bookstore in the same afternoon, you might even find some crafty books to go along with your supplies!
