There are few events that quintessetially usher in a new season. The Portland Nursery's Apple Festival is one. There are so many ways that families can enjoy the Festival that it's become quite a Portland staple. First, there are performers that play all sorts of kinds of music -- grab a caramel apple and plunk yourself down on a haybale in the covered shelter to enjoy country, rock, bluegrass, jazz and folk by several different performers.
After that, you're going to want to take your children over to the craft tent, where they can paint small pumpkins, make a pine cone bird feeder, get a personalized balloon creation or help them get their face painted. While it may seem crowded, spaces open up pretty quickly, so it's worth the wait.
In addition to the caramel apples, there is strudel and popcorn to chow on. There are cooking demonstrations as well, along with sale by several vendors of speciality food items. The big purchase, though, will come with the bins full of apples and pears of nearly every imaginable variety. Compared to the price of similar varieties at grocery stores, the prices are rock bottom -- you'll delight in carrying home bags full and enjoying the fresh fruits, plus the pies and crisps for weeks to come.
One word of caution -- it gets very crowded by mid-day, so try to get there early. Also, the parking lot is particularly crazy, so take public transportation or park on a side street to avoid the frustration. Munch away!
