At the hatchery: Display ponds offer a relaxing place to feed large rainbow trout and view adult white sturgeon measuring more than 10 feet long. There is a gift shop open during summer months. Interpretive displays are available inside and out, including an informational video and a viewing area to watch fall spawning activities.
What a wonderful way for children to see the pattern of fish migration, and learn about where their potential dinner may be coming from. Watching the fish return up river after being at sea will give them a great visual way of understanding the cycle of a fish's life. At the Fish Hatchery, scientists collect eggs for incubation to help the struggling fish populations survive.
The viewing screen in the public area is a great way of seeing how it all works. The area includes a great gift shop and then, you can walk through the Bonneville Dam to watch how the power plant works. Altogether, it's a great educational experience.
The Dam is 40 miles outside of Portland, a beautiful drive along the Gorge. Have a wonderful, informative day!
