It was 1954. The world was suffering from unrequited love, a big post-war baby boom and an insatiable craving for sweet solace. In the heart of Little Italy, sharing a cold water flat with creepies, crawlies and things that go bump in the night lived Serendipity 3.

Word on the Street

Rare is the place that will delight you as both a child and as an adult. Think about Disneyland (or world) and the circus. They were great when you were a kid but now they somehow lack the same appeal now that you've been in the real world for a while and have kids of your own to delight. Consider, then, a place that intrigued and thrilled you as a kid that could possibly hold the same amount of excitement and you may just be considering Serendipity 3. We're not so sure why they call it "3" and one would guess it appears somewhere on the website, but regardless Serendipity offers plenty of the palate and the eyes. Frankly, while the menu is just fine and offers more than your standard burger, the desserts are the real draw. If you and your fam haven't yet partaken of a frozen hot chocolate, you really need to. No, it's not the best thing you'll ever put in your mouth, but it's pretty darned close. Among many families we know, it's an annual, and unbroken tradition to make the trek to Serendipity (for some reason, in the Winter, when one would think there would be no call for frozen hot chocolate) and indulge in a little frozen chocolate-y delight. While you're there you may get lucky and rub elbows with a celebrity. If not, let your kids revel in all the kitschy point-of-purchase goodies in the front. Be prepared to wait for a table unless you have reservations, which are limited and are not accepted for desserts only. And speaking of desserts, if the frozen hot chocolate doesn't interest you please be assured there is an endless supply of alternatives just waiting to join the ranks of the truly famous.
