Word on the Street

Sure, everyone knows the Empire State Building. It's that skyscraper--once the tallest in the city--whose colors change at night to reflect some holiday or important event. It's that place where you can go to the 86th floor or the 102nd floor and observe the city at its most beautiful and peaceful (unless you have a fear of heights). It's also that place that features the SKYRIDE, an indoor thrill machine that simulates flying and is, naturally, wildly popular among the younger set. Yes, it's that place oft-featured in movies where people meet, break up, and meet again, and where a certain ape sadly met his demise. But, have you actually been in there? To the top? After standing in that crazy line, which seems to snake around the building no matter what time of year? Yeah, that's what we thought; neither have we. Well, look at it this way: If you haven't been to the ESB, to the top we mean, then you really need to go (so do we!). How can we call ourselves true New Yorkers otherwise? Go early, go during the week, and be mindful of the weather.Be advised there is a major security check, hence the long lines. Only carry-on size or smaller bags are permitted and no glass is permitted at all.
