The fireflies are out, the pools are crowded, and schools all over the city and the counties are closing their doors ‘til the end of August. No doubt about it, summer is coming, and with the arrival of summer comes a host of summer reading initiatives designed to get or keep your kids excited about reading. "Make a Splash" is the name of this year's program, and no matter where you live in the Baltimore area, your local library's got something special on deck. Simply sign up online or at a nearby branch and read, read, read all summer long. Got a kid who's too young to read independently? Or one who's too old to think summer reading is cool? No problem, because Make a Splash has something for every kid, from birth through Grade 12. And there are prizes! Good prizes, like Orioles tickets and gift cards and limited-edition Make a Splash T-shirts. Just keep track of the books you read this summer, tally ‘em up, and submit your list online or at your library. With so many great titles out there, combined with a ton of enticing incentives, you and your kids will have an even harder time than usual keeping your noses out of the books.
Though with all of the special events, live performances and other fun activities your library has planned for the summer, you and the kids will want to get out from time to time. Whether your child's into snakes, jewelry-making, magic shows or video games, he or she won't believe all of the fantastic stuff that is happening at libraries all over the Baltimore area. Check your local library system's Web site for a complete listing of Make a Splash events. Following are the links to five area systems:
